In this portfolio piece I focused on showing my skills to write a Game Design Document. Below you can find out more information regarding the General game, Character controller, Menu gameplay, Quest system and other bits of information that are in the game.
The game is for the mobile platform. It is designed to be played with one hand and has very simple controls. Our target audience is players from 16 years old to 45+.
In Gladiator - Arena Masters you quest as a fighter in a ARPG style gameplay, or fight opponents in an online PvP battle. You will earn fame while fighting in different Arenas and climb the leaderboards, and you will also be able to explore, quest and claim dominance over the realm!

The core loop is designed in such a way where players will face a situation and solve it with 3 options, one offensive choice, one defensive choice and character movement.
The only thing that can make or break the players plan is the opponent. The opponent has the same 3 options to choose from, but the winner will be the player who assesses the situation and breaks the opponents plan to succeed.
Players will be able to interact with friends. Players will also be able to send materials to guild members that will be used for player progress.
In the equipment tab players will be able to customize and equip their character, and depending on what weapons and equipment the player chooses their character traits and stats change, as well as combat stands.
Players will get rewarded for questing and competing in a match, the amount will depend on if they emerged victorious or not.
Players will get a victory chest as a reward that will be assigned on an empty chest slot and the timer will count down for that chest until it is ready to be opened.
We do not want players to feel that this is a Pay To Win game, so purchase will help players progress in the game but will not give any benefits against other non-paying players in PvP combat that they cannot gain. This game is a Free IOS and Android game that has in-game ads that can be paid to remove ads. Players are also able to do micro transactions from the store, as well as purchase a season pass where they will gain more rewards from fights and benefits to crafting materials and visual enhancements to gear.
Ad Driven
Players will be prompted to watch an ad to gain more resources from chests and PvP fights. There is also a daily ad section in the game where players can choose to watch an ad in return for resources and crafting materials. We do not want players to leave the game world if they don't choose to watch an ad and therefore we are very careful when we want to show players ads.
Micro-transactions
Players can buy in-game currency gems from the shop that can be used to open chests and reduce timers on victory chest locks and crafting timers. With these gems players are also able to reduce the lockout timer from the ARPG part of the game after losing a fight. Players are also able to purchase daily items in the form of gear/character cosmetics and crafting blueprints with these currency gems.
Season Pass
Players are able to purchase season passes so that they can gain more daily resources and materials while playing.
Realm buff
Players can purchase a realm buff that will benefit all players of that realm.
The controller should be easy to understand and the character feel fluent with the movement or when performing actions. We want a clean UI and commands given to the character should be easy to perform with one hand.
By holding and dragging on the screen you make the character walk in the desired direction.
By swiping on the screen you will make the character evade in the desired direction.
By holding down on the screen more than 0.5 seconds you will make the character block incoming attacks.
By tapping on the screen your character will perform a quick but light attack, the animation time is dependent on what weapons you have equipped on your character.
By holding and releasing the screen between 0.2 seconds and 0.5 seconds your character will perform a slow but heavy attack, the animation time is dependent on what weapons you have equipped on your character.
You can get a fast overview of your character in the home screen, also important information and notifications are located in the top part of the screen. You can also see if any victory chest has a timer left or is able to be opened. From the home menu you are also able to cue for a PvP match against an opponent online.
World players
Shows the ranking of the 100 top ranking players in the world.
Friends
Shows the ranking of you and your friends.
Rank
Rank is earned by winning a PvP match.
Shows information that is important for players from happenings in the game. Players are also able to get more news and more information regarding the game and updates from the information scroll button.
After players have earned a chest from a PvP victory, a timer will start counting down if there are any chest spots available. Chests can contain either coins, equipment, weapons, gems or crafting materials that will help the player to progress in the game.
You are able to equip and unequip your character based on your playstyle. Each equipment piece has one character stat modifier that will be added to the players stats when equipped. You are able to choose from 6 different equipment slots to equip gear, and there are 3 types of gears with different perks for each slot.
Stolen gear
The stat modifier is pre chosen and players are not able to respec this equipment. This equipment cannot be enhanced. Earned from defeating ARPG opponent cell.
Earned gear
Players can choose the stat modifier of each level on this equipment and players are able to respec this equipment. This equipment can be enhanced. Earned from PvP chest.
Crafted gear
Players are able to craft these types of equipment with gems that have different stat modifiers depending on the rarity and type of the gem the player has chosen. Earned from chest rewards.
Depending on the gear, points can differ on each modifier. Players can choose from these 4 modifiers; Attack, Health, Critical, Defence. The points will only be added to the character stats if the gear is equipped on the character.
Depending on the gear players are able to level up the rarity of the equipment by spending materials. There are 4 different rarities; Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Each level adds a stat modifier to the character stats
In the crafting tab you can craft equipment from your owned blueprints, purify gems to a higher value rarity and refine materials for a more exotic material.
If the player selects a blueprint they want to craft they will be able to craft the specific item if they have equipped gems in all the rarity sockets, and are able to afford the materials it costs to craft the equipment. Players are able to choose gems from their inventory to add to the rarity sockets. The crafted equipment will have the stats from the socketed gem. Players can collect and equip the item after the crafter NPC has finished the task.
Players can purify gems and increase their rairity by combining gems with the same rarity as the selected gem. The higher the rarity of the gem the more points it will grant the gear it will be attached to. Players can collect the crafted gem when the crafter NPC has finished the task. There are 4 levels of gem rarity; Basic, Shiny, Special and Unique.
When players are lacking a material they need for crafting they can choose to combine other materials for more of the selected material. When the crafter NPC has finished the task the material can be collected by the player.
You compete for the domination of the realm online. This is a live service that players send in a number of points to a google online service and receives the total score of each section from each faction and calculates the dominating faction. By playing the quest mode of the game players will contribute with points on the selected section in the map.
Main Quest
Players are able to choose difficulty and quests to complete.
Side Quests
The chosen quests will correspond to the section of the map that players will quest in.
The axe belonging to the north realm - Grants +5 attack to the controlling faction
The sword belonging to the west realm - Grants +5 defense to the controlling faction
The spear belonging to the south realm - Grants +5 critical to the controlling faction
To help you continue progressing in the game you are able to buy merchandise from the shop, such as Daily Item, Daily Deals, Chests, Gems and Coins.
Each day players will be presented with a daily item that they could buy with coins. The daily item can be an equipment piece or a blueprint recipe.
With the daily deal players will each day get a free chest containing either coins, equipment, weapon, gems or crafting materials. The daily deal also offers 5 other deals to buy with coins or gems containing crafting materials.
Players are able to buy chests with coins containing either coins, equipment, weapon, gems or crafting materials.
Players are able to buy coins from gems to finance the purchase of the daily item, daily deals or chests. Coins can also be used to buy a heal from the healing fountain while questing.
You can choose how you want to play the level from a list of events. You have the option to choose difficulty on all events, but the higher the difficulty you choose the more you will earn for your faction. You are also able to choose the side quests you want to complete, by choosing side quests you will affect the area you will quest in and which area you contribute your realm points to for your faction.
Players can choose from a list the event they want to play as a main quest. By completing the event players will get a boost to the realm points contributed for the players faction and rewards. Players must choose 1 main quest to complete in the level. Players will also be able to choose the difficulty level of the event.
Players can select the side quests from a list they want to complete. By completing side quests players will contribute with realm points for the players faction. Players must have 3 side quests to complete in the level.
Fighting for relic ownership has a lot of upside and boosts your characters stats, if your faction controls a relic you will get a stat bonus. Relics have an origin and will grant the characters of the controlling faction an extra increased stat bonus if controlled by the origin faction. Stat bonuses from the relics, Attack, Defence and Critical.
It is said that this axe is a relic given to humanity as a gift from the gods. Wielding this artifact gives great power and strength to defeat your enemies. This object is one of the remnants left from a lost civilization.
The sword of the realm is said to grant a lot of power to whoever possesses it to defend the realm from enemies. It is one of the relics left from the former king that ruled these lands.
The rulers spear has one of the sharpest blades ever known. The balance and agility of this object is so precise and perfect that the wielder of the spear would do devastating critical damage to enemies. In the past this was given as a gift to the rule of the lands.
You compete for territory dominance online against other players. By completing main the quest or side quests you will contribute to your faction's dominance against other factions on the map. The more realm dominance you help your faction obtain in the world, the more daily rewards will be distributed to you.
Realm Dominance
Realm control will contribute to the daily rewards distributed to players. The more your faction controls the realm the more daily rewards will the players belonging to that realm receive. This is a live service and will calculate dominance, rewards and reset each day.
Territory Control
Players can choose which area of the map they want to contribute realm points to. By completing the main quest and side quest on the selected area they will help their faction to get control over it. A fire will erupt on that area to show players that the area is under siege.
Depending on the difficulty players have chosen of the main quest they will be rewarded bonuses to realm points contribution for that selected map section, by completing the main quest.
When players complete side quests they will contribute with faction points to the selected map section. If the selected map section is controlled by the players faction the points will be counted as defensive points, if not then the points will be counted as offensive points. On a daily basis players will get rewards based on the realm control and sections controlled as a daily login reward.
Controlling a faction relic, players fighting for that faction will be granted an extra +5 stat bonus corresponding to the relic origin. This bonus will be granted to questing players fighting for that faction and competing online in PvP battle.
Axe special bonus - Extra +5 Attack if controlled by Viking
Sword special bonus -Extra +5 Defence if controlled by Knight
Spear special bonus -Extra +5 Critical if controlled by Gladiator
Players will receive daily login rewards. The rewards will be distributed depending on the realm control. The stronger control your faction has of the map, the more rewards will be distributed to your character.
Chests
To encourage exploration of the level players can find chests in certain areas of the level. The chest will drop coins, gems and have a higher chance to drop blueprints used for crafting equipment.
Resources
There are resources spread out through the level that players can collect. This is an extra income source for coins, metal scraps and leather scraps.
Mining
Players are able to pick up or mine materials that they will find scarce throughout the level. This will be a continuous task that players can do when they are running around in the level completing quests. Players are able to pick up wood and mine bronze and iron deposits.
By defeating enemy opponents in the level may cause them to drop gems, coins, blueprints for crafting or one of their equipped items. This equipment will be classified as stolen gear and the stat modifier is pre chosen, players are not able to respec or enhance this equipment. The higher level an opponent is the better tier they will have equipped, and that equipped gear that the opponent has equipped will drop. This is a good way for new players to equip their character to progress in the game and also as an extra income source for the players resources.
We are strong believers in letting players decide on how they want to fight, so therefore we designed a system that supports that.
On each of the 6 different equipment slots players will be able to choose one out of four stats for their earned and crafted gear each time it levels up,
and in total there are 4 different levels on each gear.
As a result players will have a lot of opportunities to create their own character that fits their combat style.
Stolen
Stolen gear can be collected from fallen enemies in the ARPG part of the game. This gear cannot be leveled up and therefore players cannot choose stats to specialize the gear. These items are there to help new players to progress in the game.
Earned
Earned gear can be collected from victory chests when defeating opponents online, or by buying chests at the shop. These items can be leveled up with Metal scraps and players can choose skills to specialize on each level. These items can be respected.
Crafted
Players are able to craft gear they want by having the resources needed and choosing skill gems to add to blueprints that can be collected from victory chests, finding chests by exploring the ARPG part of the game, defeating enemies or buying in shop. This item cannot be respected.
Armor
Armor pieces can be equipped in the armor slots. There are 4 different armor slots: Helmet, Chest, Gloves and Foot. The stats from the equipped armor piece will add to your character's stats.
Main Hand
Weapons can be equipped in the main hand slot. This will specialize the combat style for your character, and directly affect the damage output of your attacks and the stats from the equipped weapon piece will add to your characters stats.
Off-Hand
Off-hand weapons and shields can be equipped on the off-hand slot. This will specialize the combat style for your character, and directly affect the damage output of your attacks. The stats from the equipped off-hand piece will add to your character's stats.
Stats
Your stats will be calculated on the equipment you as a player choose to equip on your character with. The stats will effect the the damage output your character does, health of your character, defense against enemy attacks, the critical chance that one of your attacks will be a critical and the base damage that your attacks does to an enemy opponent. The higher value of a stat the more of that stat will be improved in combat.
To further push the concept that it's the players choice that matters we let players choose combat styles depending on what Main-Hand and Off-Hand item players equip on the character. There are 6 different styles. Each style comes with its own flaws and benefits that let the players explore how to utilize and gain the most advantages from in combat.
Unarmed
Fast attacks, but does not hit that hard.
Main Hand
Hits hard, and has a fast back hand attack. But does not utilize all damage.
Off-Hand
Fast Main hand attack but does not do much damage. Off-hand hits hard.
Main and Off-Hand
Medium fast and medium hard attacks.
Dual-Wield
Hits harder, and has a fast back hand attack.
Two-Handed
Very hard hitting attacks, but slow!
There are 3 types of roaming enemies, and each type enemy has a specific play style and role when encountering the player. These enemies are Tier 1 and 2 in the military rank and are usually easily defeated or can be avoided altogether.
Tank: Tries to come close to the player and block its attacks, giving DPS and Archers an advantage to deal damage to the player.
DPS: Tries to step in and quickly deal damage to the player before stepping out of range again.
Archer: Tries to hold itself at long range and shoot the player with arrows.
These enemies are Tier 3 or Tier 4 in the military rank, with a Boss that spawns that is Tier 5 if the player has good enough gear equipped to be able to fight a boss. These cells can spawn up to 3 opponents at once with one of them being the mini boss that the player has to defeat to be able to progress further in the level.
Enemies in the cell will have one of 3 possible aggressiveness in combat that will determine their playstyle when encountering the player.
Players will have to defeat all enemies in the cell after entering it.
